- 0.5 cup salted caramel sauce
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 15.25 oz dry spice cake mix (1 box)
- 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and sliced
- 0.5 cup chopped pecans (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F). While it warms, grease your 9x13 inch baking dish lightly with butter or non stick spray, though the fruit is unlikely to stick.
- Empty both cans of apple pie filling into the dish. Spread them out with a spoon until you have a perfectly flat, even layer covering the entire bottom.
- Drizzle the 0.5 cup of salted caramel sauce over the apples in a zigzag pattern. Note: This ensures every serving gets a hit of that salty sweet contrast.
- Sprinkle the 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon evenly across the caramel and apples. The aroma of raw cinnamon meeting the cold fruit is your first sensory checkpoint.
- Open the spice cake mix and sprinkle it over the fruit. Use the back of a spoon to gently level the powder, pushing it into the corners. Do not stir the layers.
- Slice the chilled 1 cup of butter into about 24 to 30 thin pats. Arrange them in neat rows over the cake mix, covering as much surface area as possible.
- If using, scatter the 0.5 cup of chopped pecans over the butter slices. The pecans will toast in the butter fat as it melts.
